Speeding in Australia
Just like the UK, Australia has speed cameras and police with mobile speed guns. The
difference in Australia is that they are very strict about the speed limit and even
2KPH over the speed limit could be enough for you to loose merit points. The
fines and lost demerit points work on a sliding scale, so the more over the limit
you are the more demerit points you'll loose and the larger the fine will be
Demerits
These work in the opposite sense to points in the UK. You start with
merit points and if you get pulled over for speeding you loose merit points. On
busy bank holiday weekends and holiday periods such as Christmas and New Year, double
demerits are enforced. Simply put, if you get speeding you loose double
the merit points that you would have lost on a normal day
We will be putting more information about the merit points system here shortly
